We as a community come together for the betterment of today’s world, walking in the path built yesterday and opening the door to the future. At this workshop we’ve outline a few key issues in the different sectors, and helped by providing solutions to overcome the challenges:

Leadership/Administration

  • More healthy role models
  • More stuff for kids and teens to become healthy role models
  • Be open to new ideas
  • More organized when it comes to appointments
  • More communication between band members and housing committee
    • Better organized appointments
    • Ask band members what they would like to see
  • Band mismanagement of funding, need to apologize to the membership, also membership needs to forgive them also
  • Hold leadership and administration accountable and understanding that these people work for us.
  • NFN members grassroots that’s us at the band office, Chief & Council, Treaty Office, Education, Health etc.
  • Non judgmental leadership
  • Non judgmental workers in the band office
  • Membership has to be updated and people who shouldn’t be on our band list who were not voted into Snaw’Naw’As shouldn’t be on our list, take back our power
  • Treaty wastes too much money, could be spent in a more better and positive to help support cultural gatherings etc. that includes all members not just chosen people - all should get jackets

Youth / Elders

  • More sports
  • More get togethers

  • Bring elders and youth together
  • Let elders use their voice and share their teachings with the youth as opposed to the limits put on them at the elders gatherings today

Environment / Resources

  • Help elders if needed to keep yard or home clean
  • Make contests for most clean yards or areas (makes it more fun for kids)
  • Help and ideas outside our communities for clean and quality reserve
  • Land has to be given, first respect to NFN not non band members who got on the list because of nepotism, take back our rights
  • Water and sewer needs to be improved since sewer has gone in lots of sickness has hit many people from chlorinated water
  • Progress or regress?
  • Need a clean up crew to get rid of garbage in our yards

Emergency Services

  • Need emergency practice get together in case of earthquake or if the island sinks
  • Classes to practice and learn first aid
  • Need an emergency services team in our community

Lands / Infrastructure

  • A workshop on lands and infrastructure so we as a whole, understand the processes of how much is involved
  • Our newer homes need to be better insulated for coolness in summer & heat in the winter

Arts / Culture

  • This is vastly neglected
  • Our artists need exposure and support from chief and council, band manager
  • More cultural gatherings need to be held in our community
  • Build positive environment, less finger pointing at negative by others who don’t offer positive words
  • Artists are being discluded from any resources
  • This needs support and this should be able to be applied for with the right people working in our administration and chief and council
  • More drumming and singing
  • More traditional teachings
  • Traditional arts - being shown how to do art
  • Speak Hul’q’umi’num
  • Not enough being trained in our Hul’q’umi’num language

  • Better programs for special needs
  • Transportation for single parents / disability need to be made available to NFN - not just an open account to administration / chief and council
  • Social workers to be trained to handle disability concerns, crises, single parents etc. as opposed to having a qualified social worker to be a financial advisor
  • Communications from chief and council, band manager, fisheries, S.A., alcohol and drug counselors, education etc.
  • More children’s services for young parents and single parents
  • Need more support

Health

  • Need more support from paid CHR and drug and alcohol worker on reserve
  • Too much lacking in CHR and NNADAP, must use best of resources available
  • Need self help seminars and workshops
  • Clean up our band membership list
    • Some people are on there without our permission or vote
    • But put on there and tend to be arrogant, disrespectful to our nation
  • More open band meetings
  • More of a health committee
  • More elder care
  • Workshops for self awareness
  • More involvement

Education

  • transportation for all levels of education, membership chip in to pay for gas monies etc.
  • not enough training programs for the community
  • need education services that can better communicate with our youth
  • better transportation for students and young adults
  • have a Hul'q'umi'num' school for our children
  • need more compassionate and more culturally aware educational worker, not someone based on nepotism.
  • children should not feel like reserve school students in this day and age
  • we need a worker from our own nation

Please keep in mind, these are some issues outlined, and through the CCP itself we ensure community/staff/leadership support each other to build successful positive solutions, and work together for a better quality of life for everybody that precedes us.
